Xero was considering acquiring a SaaS payroll company to meet the needs of a potential new market. SPAN was tasked with reviewing the engineering aspects of the company.

Provide Xero with a clear, evidence-based understanding of the technical strengths and risks of the target company to inform their acquisition decision.

What We Did

As an independent third-party, SPAN conducted a comprehensive technical audit of the product, its engineering processes, and overall operability. The review assessed the architecture, code quality, and the product’s adaptability and integration potential. Key areas of the engineering evaluation included DevOps maturity, toolchain robustness, and the team’s scalability. SPAN also analyzed the product’s scalability, operability, and the expected cost of integration with Xero’s systems. The due diligence process involved meetings with key stakeholders, in-depth product reviews, and a thorough examination of the source code to inform strategic recommendations.

The Result

SPAN provided a comprehensive report covering the Product, Engineering Process, and Product Operations. The report included detailed findings, observations and recommendations. Architectural challenges impacting speed to market led Xero to reconsider and ultimately abandon the acquisition after a thorough assessment.
