Digital media storefront core modernization

SPAN collaborated with our client on a multi-phase initiative to modernize the core of their large music platform.

The Challenge

At the core of our client's digital storefront is a large monolithic enterprise Java codebase that has evolved over more than 20 years by more than 700 engineers. It forms a critical part of their music application. It is tightly coupled and technically complex. Developing new features, and onboarding new engineers, has become a highly time-consuming and prohibitively expensive. Our client asked us to provide support and development of several large goals through a number of initiatives.

What We Did

SPAN has run a multi-year project which has included the following objectives:

  • Reduced coupling of key systems and business logic
  • Introduced low-level network layer operational metrics and analytics
  • Developed new reports and tooling to analyze the codebase, and to identify and rank refactoring efforts in terms of business and technical value.

The Result

The initiative has delivered improved developer efficiency, reduced build times, accelerated feature development, and provided downstream teams with greater autonomy. Additionally, a number of high-impact performance issues have been addressed.
